Massachusetts Getting Tough On Data Breach Law

“A Massachusetts restaurant chain was the first company fined under the state’s toughest-in-the-nation data breach law, according to a statement by the Massachusetts Attorney General. The Briar Group, which owns a number of bars and restaurants in Boston, is charged with failing to protect patrons’ personal information following an April, 2009 malware infestation. It was ordered to pay $110,000 in penalties and, essentially, get its *&@! together. Among the revelations from the settlement: Briar took six months to detect and remove the data stealing malware, continuing to take credit and debit cards from patrons even after learning of the data breach, said Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley.”

Hey, You! Get Off My Secure Cloud!

Recently, the issue of cloud security came up in one of our meetings.

“USB’s are going to be a thing of the past,” quipped our CEO. At first we had the hype. Now we have the reality. More and more data is being stored in the cloud.

A recent article in PC World asks the question: Public Cloud vs. Private Cloud: Why Not Both?

…a recent Info-Tech survey shows that 76% of IT decision-makers will focus initially or, in the case of 33% of respondents, exclusively on the private cloud.

“The bulk of our clients come in thinking private. They want to understand the cloud, and think it’s best to get their feet wet within their own four walls,” says Joe Coyle, CTO at Capgemini in North America.

But experts say a better approach is to evaluate specific applications, factor in security and compliance considerations, and then decide what apps are appropriate for a private cloud, as well as what apps can immediately be shifted to the public cloud.

Last year, we noticed the trend toward “consumer use of the cloud” and how that would leak into your enterprise. Now more companies are utilizing the cloud, even building private clouds that act as gated communities.

One thing is certain. Attackers will be also looking to land on one of those clouds. Keep current with best practices by bookmarking sites like Cloud Security Alliance. Forewarned is forearmed.

Yes, Information Security Is Hot, But Are You Cut Out For It?

Recently, I saw this article: Top Ten High-Demand, Low-Supply Jobs and noticed that information security was one of those “Top Ten” jobs.

This is good news for the information security industry but is it good news for you? Have you wondered if information security is a good career choice?

We posted some thoughts in this post: “So, You Wanna Be In InfoSec?” and it’s worth checking out if you’re serious.

Here’s a snippet:

One of the most common questions I get asked is “How can I become an information security professional?”. These days, it seems that a ton more people want to be in the “business” of information security. I get the question so often, I thought I would write this post as a quick and easy way to respond.

Are You Serious?

The first response is a “gut check”. Are you serious that you want to be an infosec person? Do you even know what you are asking? My suggestion is 2 steps.

1. Read a basic information security guide (not Hacking Exposed or something on an aspect, but something more general like the ISO standards).

2. Invest in your career option enough to buy a few coffees or beers and ask a couple of security folks you know of and trust to sit down, one on one with you for an hour chat. Talk about that person’s career, what day to day security work is like in their experience and what they think about your ideas for moving forward. If you can’t or won’t invest in these basic steps, then quit now and choose another career path. Security work is all about research, reading, guidance, networking and conversations with other humans. If you can’t do these toddler steps, then forget running with the big dogs and find another pack.

Super Secret Squirrel Preview Shot of the New HoneyPoint Console

If you haven’t seen HoneyPoint Console since the 2.xx days, the Console is now a whole new thing. Feedback from the alpha testing teams has been fabulous. And yes, those tabs expand, we compressed them to hide the info in the columns. How to Avoid Falling For Social Engineering Attacks

I am one of the “end-users” in our organization. I’m not a tech, but over the years have had my eyes opened regarding information security and ways I can safeguard my own private data. My favorite tool is a password vault, which helps tremendously as I belong to dozens of sites. Quite frankly, I can’t remember what I had for dinner yesterday much less recall all the different passwords needed to access all those sites. So a password vault is incredibly helpful.

But what really fascinated me was the discovery of social engineering. Social engineering is when someone uses deceptive methods in order to get you to release confidential information. Sometimes it’s almost obvious, sometimes it’s sneaky. But on most occasions, people don’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late.

I’ll give an example: One time I received several phone messages from my credit union. I was told there was an issue and to return the call. I called my credit union to discover that (surprise, surprise), there was no “issue” and they never called me. So when this shady outfit called me two days later, I was home and answered the phone. After the woman went through some type of script (needing my account number, natch), I blew up.

“For your information, I contacted my credit union and there IS no issue and no need to speak to me. How in the world do you sleep at night, deliberately trying to get people to give you confidential information so you can steal from them? You’ve got a helluva lotta nerve to keep calling!”  The woman was silent. I slammed the phone down. I never heard from them again.

The point of this colorful little story is that thieves and hackers are everywhere. With our information becoming more digitalized, we need to be on guard more than ever before and use the most powerful weapon we’ve got.

QUESTION EVERYTHING.

And follow some of these tips:

  1. If you receive an email from PayPal or a credit card company and they want to “verify” your account, check the URL. If a letter of the company’s name is off or it looks totally different, do NOT click on it. (You can see the URL usually by hovering your mouse over the link.)
  2. Never  click on a link in an email to a financial institution. If you are a member of this institution, call their customer service number. Have them check your account to see if indeed there was a need to contact you.
  3. Always check the identity of anyone who is calling you on the phone to ask for confidential information. Say you’re about to run out the door and get their name and phone number. Then call the organization they represent to verify that this person is legit.
  4. Check to make sure a site is secure before passing on confidential information. Usually this information is either available under a “Privacy” link or an icon (like a lock) is visible in the address bar.
  5. At your workplace, use the same approach. Be friendly, but wary in a good way. If you have a courier who needs to give their package directly to the recipient, casually ask a co-worker if they could accompany the courier to their destination and then ensure they leave promptly afterward. Use this method for any strangers who are visiting your organization such as repairmen, copier salespeople, or phone technicians.

Speaking of copiers, beware of “boiler-room” phone calls. These are attempts to gather information about your copier (i.e., serial number, make and model of copier) so the unscrupulous company can ship expensive supplies to a company and then bill you, as though it was a purchase initiated by your company. These types are scumballs in my book. After I learned what they did, I’d have a bit of fun with them before hanging up. Now I don’t have the patience for it. I just hang up.

You have to be sharper than ever to see through a social engineering attack. The challenge is to retain that sharpness while in the midst of multiple tasks. Most of the time, the attacker will take advantage of a busy receptionist, a chaotic office, or a tired staff when they try their dastardly deed. (Ever notice you hardly get these attempts early in the morning, when you’re awake and alert? And how many happen close to quitting time on a Friday?)

Just a few thoughts to keep you sane and safe. Confound the social engineering attacks so you won’t be the one confounded! Good luck!

#Security News: Cloud Computing, Gmail, and the Future of Infosec Pros

While trotting around the information security news items, we found a few you may enjoy:

David Taber from CIO, attended this year’s Dreamforce 2010, an annual conference hosted by the wildly successful CRM (and more) company, Salesforce.com. He posted an excellent article: Dreamforce 2010: 8 Cloud Lessons.

Wasp’s 0-Interface Design

A few people have asked me to elaborate on HoneyPoint Wasp’s (and HoneyPoint Agent’s) zero interface design. I’ll take a moment to explain what it is and how it works. Both Wasp and Agent are designed to be run on Windows systems as a “service”. Windows services run in the background on the system and usually do not have a graphical user interface.

With Wasp and Agent, we extended that concept to make them further transparent to the user by ensuring that no communication with the user of the system takes place. Unlike personal firewalls and most other information security, HoneyPoint does not have pop-up windows, user alerts or the like that occur on the Windows system. Instead, all alerts, security events and data are sent from the monitored system to the centralized Console. The Console then alerts the security team to incidents and security threats, without bothering the user at all.

The nicest thing about this design is that end users are never bothered with alerts and pop-ups that impact their work, cause help desk calls or interfere with their use of the system. In our experience, users usually don’t read the alerts or respond to the pop-ups anyway, so we spare them the noise. Instead, the security team can centrally monitor the Console and make decisions about when to act, contact the user or remove the computer from service based on what they see. This leads to better security choices overall, higher user productivity and vastly improved visibility for the security team.

The 0-interface design is a fantastic strength of HoneyPoint. It allows for the easy installation of a security tool that is all but invisible to the end-users of the system. It has no impact on user productivity, causes no spikes in help desk calls and requires no end-user training to deploy. Security teams get all of the positives of stronger visibility into the workstation world without any of these negatives, long associated with more traditional approaches.
